Thankful Thursday

We can only be said to be alive in those moments when our hearts are conscious of our treasures.  ~Thornton Wilder

A quote in a "from the Archives" post from April 2006
"Ever find yourself blogging just because it is on your “to do” list?   Until today, I had not but I am just full of uninspiration!  Not that there isn't anything going on on to blog about; not that I am not brimming with fabulous ideas with which I could, ever so eloquently,  share.  Perhaps it is more that my life, in general, is ordinary.

Ordinary is a good thing.  There is joy and peace and contentment in the status quo of ordinary.  Ordinary days are those you can count your blessings and give thanks.  Our family is healthy, we have food and clothing and a roof over our heads.  The birds are singing, the sun is shining and all is well in our little realm.  Our life is much the same today as it has been for some time."

Here I sit, five years after writing those words and they still hold true.  Some things have changed, naturally.  The progression of time goes on, children grow and now I find myself with a freshman in high school and a 4th grader to teach!
It is another ordinary day and I am blessed and grateful.  Mike has work, the kids are well.  The vehicles are in working condition with gas in them and there is food in the pantry.   I am thankful for another day to home school our children and be a homemaker.  This too is a precious gift.   It is hard to remember sometimes, when we are having trouble in a subject or with attitudes, but a gift it is.
There are struggles, there always are, and I sometimes loose site of the "big picture" and get muddled in the minutia.  There are problems and health issues with people we love that are a matter for daily fervent prayer and encouragement. And still, I am filled with gratitude.

The unthankful heart... discovers no mercies; but let the thankful heart sweep through the day and, as the magnet finds the iron, so it will find, in every hour, some heavenly blessings!  ~Henry Ward Beecher

I am grateful not because my life is so wonderful but because I have been given this life to live. Sadly, sometimes it takes a huge effort of will to stay thankful.
For instance, when I am doing the dishes for the billionth time ( that day) and I am grumbling,  rather it should remind me to be grateful for the meal the dishes were used for and the family I have to serve it to and eat it with.

If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.   ~J. R. R. Tolkien

When I tire of doing yet another load of dirty laundry and sigh over the clothes as I fold them, I am grateful for my friend's humor, if only I would remember and I am thankful for clothes on our backs.
From Kate on the WTM boards, long ago, a la Aragorn at the Black Gate...
I see in your eyes the same mountain that would take the heart of me. A day may come when this laundry pile of mine overwhelms me, when I forsake clean towels and break all scoops of soap, but it is not this day.  An hour of soiled shirts and dirty pants, when the laundry room comes crashing down, but it is not this day. Today, I fold! For all of the children in my house, and for my dear husband too, I tell you I will sit, and fold my laundry!"

When I have to vacuum the carpets and furniture daily because of all the pet's fur and grow weary in it, it is a simple thing to pick up the cat and cuddle him and give thanks for the companionship of dear furry friends.
The difference between friends and pets is that friends we allow into our company, pets we allow into our solitude.  ~Robert Brault

At the end of each day I am thankful for my "spot".  The place where I sit, when all is done to survey my little realm and all it's blessings.
And when I am weary, just in general, it is the blessing of the man I married that makes me smile.  My hardworking, inspirational, musical, stalwart companion.
Many days we barely have any time together at all, a quick chat in the morning while I make his lunch, a phone call to check in, but most evenings will find us in companionable silence, reading together and sharing bits of our book and our days.
That quiet mutual gaze of a trusting husband and wife is like the first moment of rest or refuge from a great weariness or a great danger.  ~George Eliot
And foremost, I am grateful for a place to go to learn about being grateful and knowing to Whom I am most indebted.

Colossians 3:15-17
And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Ephesians 5:20
Giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

 Philippians 4:6
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

Psalm 106:1
Praise the Lord! Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!
1 Thessalonians 5:18
Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

 James 1:17
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.

Amen! May I be thankful and never fail to notice the heavenly blessings. Thankful for God's mercies. They are new every morning...even on ordinary days! God bless you and thanks for visiting me.

So, SO many things to be thankful for ~ especially the ordinary!! I think too often we overlook the blessing of a life that's comfortable and relatively unchanging.

Wonderful post.
