I am Thankful for Opportunity

This week we are taking a 3 day art class given by Barry Stebbing from How Great Thou Art. I am so filled with gratitude for this opportunity for the girls. As much as I have desired for them to learn the basics of artistic expression, it wasn't something I was equipped to teach. We have bought Mr. Stebbing's curriculum over the years and have enjoyed it but have never done anything really structured. This week they are learning as they never have before and I am so thrilled for them.
Every artist dips his brush in his own soul, and paints his own nature into his pictures.
~Henry Ward Beecher
Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.  ~Scott Adams

Painting is the grandchild of nature. It is related to God.  ~Rembrandt van Rijn

Each day they begin with drawing, move onto painting and finish with colored pencils.  The class is 2 1/2 hours long each day and not only was it affordable but Mom covered it for them.  (Thanks Mom)

Enthralled after the first day, Rowan came home inspired and after finishing school sketched the remainder of the evening.   Jenna, ever hard on herself, was stressed following the first day and unhappy.  I told her I would have loved to take the class too and so she happily set up and instructed me in everything she had learned that day.  She was feeling greatly encouraged after the second day when he looked at her homework and wrote "excellent" across the top, so much so that when we purchased the curricula, she wanted him to sign it for her.  And bless his heart he did and Rowan's as well.

"The art of art, the glory of expression and the sunshine of the light of letters, is simplicity."    ~Walt Whitman
Mr Stebbing himself is a gifted teacher.  I have rarely seen anyone so capably hold in thrall a class of over 80 people from age 5 to 55.  He is charming and engaging and the kids love him.   His wife and helpmeet Saundra, I have been blessed to get to know as I help her each day distributing paint and such.  She is absolutely lovely.   Barry even let the children take home his own art journals that he has been keeping for years to look over and get an idea of what he means when he says, "art journal".

We purchased the curricula called Feed My Sheep.  The bundle with the dvds, supplies and text was on sale which made it just that much more appealing.  I am so thrilled about the dvd lessons!  Mr. Stebbing to come home with us to play whenever we need.  I am so delighted to be able to at last have a way to give the girls the tools they need to express themselves artistically with confidence.  It is a huge blessing and I am so thankful.  I had already purchased God and the History of Art for Rowan's high school art classes so I bought an extra set of paint cards  so that I may do it along with her.  I am excited for myself to learn, at last, the tools and techniques to bring out my own inner artist.  I also bought the beautiful Student's Guide to Keeping an Art Journal for Rowan and I.

Today concluded our time with the Stebbings.   Barry ended the session with a wonderful slide show of great works featuring the life of Christ with Handel's Hallelujah Chorus in the background.  It was breathtaking.  They may come back next year to do an advanced class, what a blessing that would be!  The classes were informative, helpful and inspiring and I am so thankful.    Thanks also to everyone who helped make all this possible.  You know who you are, I love you.

I am still far from being what I want to be, but with God's help I shall succeed.

What a great opportunity! We have a couple of his books also. My daughter would have been over the moon to attend this class.
